Style Signatures

Whether we’re conscious of it or not, we all have our own little style signatures. It could be something as simple as a particular shade of red lipstick that you wear every day, a brand preference that winds throughout your entire wardrobe, a dash of a texture that you always work into an outfit (sequins, anyone?), a pair of favorite shoes that you constantly wear, a particular color scheme that reappears in outfits and even a haircut (or color) that you embrace year after year.

If you’re a regular reader, you’ve probably noticed that I have a few style signatures of my own. Maybe it’s the Virgo in me, but no matter how much my clothes and personal style change, some elements are always consistently in place.

I discovered the Fall 2007 RTW Dries Van Noten wedges a little late, but once I finally tracked down a pair in the middle of 2008, it was love. These shoes are shockingly comfortable in part because there’s a hidden platform in the front so that actual rise is pretty manageable. With a few pairs at my disposal, I began wearing them so much that people started recognizing me on the street by my shoes alone!

True story: I wore my Dries to the Honolulu Airport and the security guy scanned my shoes twice because he thought that they may have a secret compartment in the heels! He then repeatedly asked me what they were…he was totally dumbfounded by them.

I used to have issues when people were meeting me for the first time and couldn’t understand what ‘Nubby’ was. The second I received my Helpless Romantic nameplate necklace, I could simply point to it, smile and save a lot of energy. Haha.

Stripes. Even when I was very young, I preferred stripes much more than flower patterns. And, during my goth days in high school, I embraced having stripey tights in every possible color combination. Stripes to me are always timeless. Yet, they can make any ensemble pop. If stripes are worn right, they have that classic French quality that everyone secretly loves.

And, black nails. I used to wear other colors (mainly reds), but I much prefer black these days because it matches everything and looks way cool against my white skin (and white Mac keyboards)! Believe it or not, three coats of the cheap stuff works just well as its department store counterparts (I prefer NYC Black Lace Creme) and for 99 cents, it’s a total steal!

I proudly carry the Mouth With Pill tote (now sold out) every day. That way, when someone offers ‘paper or plastic,’ I can politely decline. We should all try to do our part to be more green.

Miu Miu gets me every time. Miu Miu was started in 1992 by Miuccia Prada and the brand is based on her nickname. My love affair with Miu Miu started in the late 90s when I’d sit around reading fashion magazines in the back of History class. I faithfully saved a stack of ads from this time and they still strike me as being totally iconic.

And then, the S/S 2008 campaign featuring Kirsten Dunst hit. Normally, I’m not a sucker for buying the stuff I see in ads, but for some reason, I was hooked. I saved up my graduation money and bought my first Miu Miu in the Spring of 2008.

The thing about these purses is that the styling is so classic that even if everyone else has one, you never feel like you’re carrying an ‘it bag.’ Miu Miu makes the type of bag that you’ll carry until it’s totally beaten up, throw it into the back of your closet, pull it out 10 years later and fall back in love with it all over again. Mine all have stains, nicks and pen marks from constant use. And to me, that’s what fashion should be all about; everyday luxury. Use what you love instead of storing it away for a rainy day.

These red cross luggage tags hang from my bags and get a lot of the clichéd “Are you a nurse?” comments. Why the obsession with the red cross? That’s another story….

What defines your style? What elements make it unique and totally yours? Are they accidental or have they been purposely incorporated? What would you like to add to your style arsenal?

i am on my third pair of russian army officer boots, the first of which i got in 1995. they’re knee-high, so they make an impression on everyone. the most common assumption is that they’re “nazi” or “jackboots” when in fact they belong to the force that kicked the nazis’ asses at stalingrad and helped turn WWII around.

the fact that they are not the more commonly worn combat boots (though i own those too) combined with less-military elements tends to make me pretty recognizable.

I know Chuck Taylors are overrated in anyone’s wardrobe, but it’s definitely one of my signature styles. The only pair I ever wear are black hemp with an eggshell white front and bottom, opposed to plain white. I purchased them while on vacation in South Korea in 2001, and no matter how battered they are, I still wear them religiously. Ripped jeans, plaid tops, bows, and yellow are also part of my style signature.

Love this. I could have guessed all of these just from reading your blog once, lol! That is great though, stick with what you love. My favorite color is red and I wear it everyday!

  4. Nubby says:

Jazzi: I love your hair, keep it long! And, big heels forever!

derek: That’s awesome that you know the story behind the boots you wear. Blackboots vs. Whiteboots….summer of 2006?? 2007? Haha.

Connie: The thing about Chucks is that they are timeless…and even though there’s a million color options now, it’s cool that you still keep them basic. That’s amazing that you’ve had them that long!

Caitlin: Yeah, you have a point. ;) I used to wear red almost every day, but sometimes I just want to blend in!

I think my hair is probably my only really recognisable and consistent signature. Having a thick eye-skimming fringe (‘lego hair’!) has been my style since I was about 16; and also from ages 3-10! (We shan’t talk about the in-between years, suffice to say I was an awkward teenager.)
Other than that I think I’m just realising that its not (and never) too late to create a signature style

The things that define my style are:
-High waisted just above the knee skirts
    -Red hair
    -Funky tights
-Some element of red almost everyday
    -Fantastic shoes everyday
-I also hardly ever wear flat shoes and I wouldn’t be caught in ballerina flats.
    -Super glossy nails

  8. Rachel says:

    Mine are; WhiteWhite messymessy hair.
-far too much mascara and liquid eyeliner.
    -Giant headphones.
    -Doc martens.

  9. Many of these are culled from friends who have an obvious habit of pointing out the things that are too consistent in my style (especially if the beau doesn’t “like” them):
    - Polka dots & stripes
    - Lightning bolt & unicorn necklace
    - big watches
    - black (or red) Fluevog flats.. I wear these like 4 days a week!
    - hot pink or turquoise

    - Red & Monochrome. Almost everything I own is black, red, white, grey or chrome. This extends to my household items & even my hair.
Internet people try to compare me with you, even though I have been doing it for a long time and in a completely different way. I was inspired by Matt Bellamy of Muse in his younger days, about 8 years ago.
    - Homemade jewellery. My favourite is a necklace in the shape of a biscuit called a “Jammie Dodger”.
    - Black leather biker jacket or black military coat. I love a black covering with chrome detailing.
    - 20 Eyelet Patent Doc Martens
    - Sexy burlesque / fetish / Jessica Rabbit inspired dresses when I have somewhere to go on a night out. My new favourite is a red diner dress with black piping

My style also extends to the art work I produce. :)

    Let’s see …

    - Tall boots are on my feet three seasons out of four. I probably have 15 pairs, all told.

    - Hoop earrings are just about all I wear, though I do rotate sizes and styles.

    - Embellished skirts

    - Unruly curls. Although this may be default more than style. ;)

    - Chunky heels

    - Bright, solid colors

    - Silver jewelry. I own ZERO gold.

Mine are oddly also black and white stripes.
This is fairly old but it gets the point across

I also am big on lots of black and red. I have lots of red accessories.
I also usually have a dark polish. If I don’t its not for more than a day before I get twitchy and change it back.
I have also had a bob with bangs my entire life.
The other think I can think of it red shoes. I wear a LOT Of red shoes. I own probably 7 or 8 pairs.

All that said I think that’s WHY I like you. Similar obsessions.

  13. Joanne says:

I’m very much still developing my signature style. But I figure, I’m 22, I’m only just out of the style wilderness that was my teenage years!!

I bought a pair of Red or Dead black leather boots in January that I wear at least every other day and I feel that they’re a big part of my evolving personal style that will stick, rather than the fads that’ll come and go.

This past year I’ve also finally LET GO of jeans as everyday wear. At this point I have one pair of blue jeans and they’re covered in paint stains anyway. I have no problem with jeans as a ‘sometimes’ thing but I felt like they were becoming a uniform for me. The boots helped with getting me out of the jeans because they deserved to be on display!!

This may sound weird but I have this perfume sample that I keep in my purse. I love the smell so much but I feel like I’m not ‘there’ yet. It wouldn’t suit me now but when I’m older it’ll be my signature perfume. Does that sound crazy?

  14. Becky says:

Nubby – you have no idea how much I lust over your fabulous Miu Miu bags! I’m not so keen on the newer season’s styles as I am on the more classic white or black leather ones, so I’m constantly keeping my eye on Ebay for my dream handbag.

My style signatures are definitely dark skinny jeans and fitted blazers, with chunky boots or Doc Martens. I’m a huge fan of awesome patterns, but the most classic pieces are definitely plain, good-quality items which can be worn with almost anything.

I was known for a really long time to be the girl with the unique t-shirts, slip-on vans, and gigantic, long mane of curls [which often turned into crazy tendrils]. Complete tomboy, never carried a purse, and always surrounded by my dudes.

Now my shirts are more subtle, but I still go for unique prints. My navy-blue messenger bag with red camera, red phone, red gameboy, and red gadgets in general are my signature pieces. I also go for luxury cuts in comfortable fabrics. I lopped off all my hair and donated it. Now it’s either a sleek bob or curly puff of fun. I’m still a tomboy, just sophisticated up a tiny bit!

  16. Caroline says:

    Hmmmmm, my signature… let’s think…

Dresses – day in, day out, usually with fitted waists and full skirts.

The black leather platform knee boots I have had since they became my signature in 1997 when I finally hit sixth form and was allowed to wear my own clothes to the school for the very first time.

Little girl/granny shoes – round toes, t-bars and ankle straps.

A tiara. Ok, not any more, but at the rock night I hung out in during high school I WAS tiara girl. I miss it!

  17. Julie says:

I always wear my Nightmare Before Christmas watch and lately I’ve taken to wear tights with pretty much everything. I also wear something gray, always.

  18. Stephanie says:

The Gypsy in me will never go away! Headwraps, Flowy Dresses, Tights, Clunky & Big Jewelry, Messy Hair and Smudged Makeup. It works for me! :)
    Virgos for Life!!

  19. Nubby says:

I like how quite a few of you mentioned Doc boots…it’s nice to hear that they haven’t totally died out!

Melanie: it’s always cool to hear of other people that are into the same things style-wise.

    Dinky Dot: Awww. Cuteness.

Gala: You’ve still gotta do it! You definitely have an arsenal of signature style elements and I’d be keen to read a post about them.

  20. Audrey says:

Everyone knows mine – even my boss constantly refers to it in meetings :

    - the glasses (wayyy before they were cool!)
    - the low slung jeans (to re-proportion my frame)
    - EVERYTHING in shades of black white and grey
    - the red cross (it’s actually how I noticed YOU!)

  21. [ t a y l o r ] says:

Mine would be my deep maroon hair, ususally worn teased to ever increasing heights!
    My septum piercing.
I have a thing for incorperating classic elegance with modern edgey styles. think tailored black dresses, rhinstone and lace gloves.
Silky fabrics or something with an interesting texture is a must.
Big gaudy rings. And I always wear a plain band on my wedding finger (decievingly).

I mix it up a lot though i don’t think there’s many contants, but these describe my main style the most!
Although i’m a bit of a raver and my signatures for that part of my time are deffinanly my white fox sneakers which creep up my ankle with all kinds of strappy goodness and my white cap with gold stitching! :)

  22. Godlesscupcake says:

I have a thing for wearing mostly black, red, burgundy & sometimes navy blue or charcoal gray to offset the black.
When eye make up, I tend to go for modernized 60′s style; thick black eyeliner with plump lashes.
There are two pairs of shoes in my collection I always veer towards: a pair of black faux suede wedge boots and a pair of red and blue striped Chinese Maryjanes. (The ‘janes are worn with socks in an intentionally clashing color which strangely always gets me compliments).
I have bags like Imelda Marcos has shoes but I gravitate towards my red & black custom trophy queen bag and a handmade tote I recycled out of one of my old barista aprons and adorned with hand embroidery.
As for jewelery, I usually wear my custom green glitter resin pendant which proudly proclaims my Vegan-ity. I compliment this with my tungsten carbide wedding ring, a large red cocktail ring from the sixties (with multicolored flowers trapped inside) and a large mahogany cocktail ring that I always get asked about.

  23. telis says:

Rad post — I love the graphic way you represented each of your style signatures. Much more inspiring than, say, a series of Polyvore sets.

    - I’m pretty much always wearing a black wristband with a silver charm reading “to thine own self be true”

    - If I have anything in my hair, it’s a thick black plastic headband. It’s strong enough to hold my thick curly hair back and I like the sharp, clean line. When I had platinum hair, it stood out really well.

    - I nearly always wear a silver thumbring with a two-headed snake on it.

    - I find that I tend to mix patterns a lot, with a strong preference for stripes, plaids, and checks.

  24. my grandmother handsews most of my skirts, so, people always tend to know me by my skirts. i also like a similiar design, as, they’re all circle skirts that are a solid color with one stripe of black or white running across the bottom. BUT i do believe i’m in the middle of a style transformation, so, let’s see what comes of it!

I think I am in the middle of trying to figure out what my style is but I always wear my silver heart necklace and always will, and I am a massive jeans person and I adore large silver cocktail rings and the bigger and brighter the better.
