Right now, a lot of independent artists and businesses are really struggling and people like you making a conscious effort to frequent them is a much needed mindset. I'm attempting to do the same thing in a way, especially with local restaurants and even the place I go to for shoe repair. For whatever reason they speak of security to me. It gives me a feeling of timelessness, that the company will be around for a while and that buying from them is a wise investment. Whether that's actually true or not is beyond me. And I'm totally feeling The Guilted Age. I'm really lucky because both my parents have worked for the same company for going on 40 years now and instead of getting laid off they're both getting promotions. Everyone comments on my "bad" spending habits and how much "useless" things I buy but I feel like since the recession hasn't hit me (and I don't think it will to the extent it has most people because both my parents make a lot, have very secure jobs and large retirement money squandered away) and so I should be less stingy and buy all those hand made items in my favorites on etsy and shop the small local markets even if it does cost more because it's putting money into the pockets of people I admire.
