Do you have any advice for someone who'd been thrust into the industry some years ago, but wants to get some sort of legitimizing degree and/or expand his skills? I've worked eleven years as an embroidery digitizer and designer, but in embroidery you do more interpretation than creation. What would you suggest for an oldster like myself who wants to become something more, and who, despite being current with all the tools of the trade, would like to become fully capable in graphic design?

I would sincerely appreciate any advice you might offer.

Reading this has really brought back hope into my eyes. I spent my early teen years experimenting and dreaming about become a Graphic Designer, but during my Freshman year I have become very busy with school work and my inspiration and creativity felt like it was thrown out the window. Reading this has giving me a push to start researching and getting serious again. Thank you! Your post is very helpful!

Nice advice. Not everyone realizes just how broad opportunities are in Graphics Design.

Lisa: Totally, seeing your work in print changes everything! Once I’ve seen something I’ve done produced, I seem to forget about all the lates nights and crazy deadlines…

Rachael: Stock photography, baby!

Cassie: You're welcome!

Thank you so much for this article! I'm set on being a graphic design as a career, but it's been so confusing deciding where to go for school and how to figure it all out. Reading this has made me quest a little bit easier.

Thank you!

I wish I'd read this post when I was 17! I finished my degree last December and have been working as an in-house designer for a hospitality company that owns a number of bars and pubs in Sydney. The work is challenging and at times frustrating but I went to one of our venues tonight and saw my poster on the back of the bathroom door and my flyers on the bar. Somehow that made it all worthwhile :)
