The difference foe me though was that grunge was in style and the only thing I could find at the mall were baggy jeans, cardigans and t-shirts! Times have definitely changed, for sure, Everything is so accessible and the looks are WAY more mature. I also remember at 12 is when I discovered fashion and started middle school. I evolved form the pigtail wearing kid to a follow the trends, play with a little make-up (not full-blown until 13 because of my mum's rules), and watch Mtv wishing I could dress like the new wave singers. The only difference bewteen 12 year old me and Kirke is her mother let's her play around with fashion. I am sure she is still a 12 year old at heart...which means getting crushes on musicians and actors, hanging around shopping areas with friends, giggling with girlfriends, and secretly playing with Barbie...despite being a miniture fashionista.
