The Week in Pictures: 10.17.08

week in pictures nubby twiglet typography

Even if I’m just gong to the grocery store, I try to infuse some style into the voyage. This American Apparel Cities Bag definitely makes a normally mundane experience much more pleasurable!

Two weeks ago, Lee and I found this pair of vintage night stands for $30.00 total. They’re aesthetically perfect. Right now, I’m very much into mixing super sleek space-age furnishings with chipped, worn white objects.

Yesterday I mentioned the white laser-cut cuckoo clock necklace that I recently bought. Isn’t it amazing? I love it when classic, old school items are redone with a totally modern twist.

Recently, Lee found this N on the side of the road in a trash heap, snapped in half and covered in chipped gold paint. After reattaching it, I painted it solid white and it’s taken on a whole new life.

My grandma gave me two of these red glass hearts earlier this year and now, they mean more to me than ever. A few days ago, I found out that she had unexpectedly passed away.

This has been especially hard because we were really close and though she was 79, she seemed half her age, was really active and had a very modern perspective on life. I’m thankful for the time we spent together while I was still in school earlier this year. I would visit her for lunch and we’d sit around, catching up.

It’s pretty rare that once you’re gone, people can only remember good things about your life. It usually seems contrived and less than accurate. But in her case, it’s true. She was the most honest, supportive person I’ve ever known and I’ll miss her very much. She never had a negative word to say about anyone, but when Smokey and I would say something terrible, she’d still laugh at us! Awww. There’s a huge void now that she’s gone.

Because of this news, I’ve been feeling somewhat out of sorts. At least I have a busy weekend ahead with family. I’m really excited to see my mom and stepdad, who arrive from Phoenix tomorrow. It will be a much needed change of pace.

There was a bright spot mid-week when my brother spent two days freelancing at Nemo, seated next to me! It was basically like school…but without the bad grades.

A few years ago, we took two different classes together with terrible results. During an HTML class, he walked out during the final and I followed (the teacher couldn’t stand us at that point anyway). During a pre-calculus class, he made me laugh during lectures. The only reason I passed was because he dropped the class!

At Nemo, it’s a much different story. When we’re both doing what we love (graphic design), the outcome is 100000% better! Do you know of any other brother / sister design duos out there? Surely, we can’t be the only ones.

This has been a week of big changes, but I’m realizing that you can never go back, so appreciate what you have right here, right now.

How was your week? Did you make any major changes? Did you have some huge breakthroughs?

I’m sorry to hear about your grandmother. It sounds like you had an amazing relationship. It’s so great when different generations find wonder in each other rather than differences. I feel similarly about my one remaining grandparent – also my grandmother. We jokingly used to call each other “The Old Bat” & “The Old Bag!”

Luv

Aww, you’re gramma! She looked so young. Much younger than her actual age. It’s a shame that she died.

*hug* for Nubby.

& I did have a breakthrough. I learned how to use beatrepeat in ableton live, so my music is much closer to what it’s like in my head.

So sorry to hear about your Nan, echoing what Poochie said, you seem to have such great relationships with all the family members you mention on here :)

Neither of us are designers, but with my background in publishing and my brother’s in music, we’re thinking about going into business publishing new sheet music at some point.

So sorry to hear about your grandmother. Here’s a great quote that helps me:

Love, like the ocean, continues beyond the horizon… And life, like the sun, shines where we cannot see.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Xoxo, Tiera

Oh baby,

Mom would love it that you put her in your blog. I’m looking forward to spending time with you on Sunday. And if you haven’t looked today, I posted some more photos on Flickr.

I am so sorry to hear about your grandma. Mine passed away last month and I know how it can make a person feel “out of sorts”.

Many positive vibes sent your way.

Best wishes Nubby. Your Grandma sounds like she was a wonderful happy spirit. Hope you feel better soon.

My week was all nasty until my (recently adopted from stray) cat popped out four healthy babies on Thursday. Kinda put my stressful week in perspective.

Kx

So sorry to hear about your grandmother. Those red glass hearts are beautiful, and I hope that they help bring you peace and remind you of wonderful things. :)

(And I also have to say…I loooove the nightstand with the “A” on it! That look is exactly my style. Super awesome.)

I always thought it was cool that you had such a close relationship with your grandma and made it a priority to have lunch with her. So sorry to hear that you were shocked with such a big and unexpected loss.

Oh, and I also dig your new(old) nightstand! What a great contrast. I just explored an antique store this morning in the little town I just moved to and was admiring some neat cabinets from all different eras and countries. So many relics from the past caused me to reflect on how we are all truly just passing through this life…you are so right about appreciating what you have right now.

Best wishes to find peace in your loving memories.

this week, i spent the entire week working alongside my mother at our job (we work in a school). it was quite interesting, sort of like…being at home, but with 18 extra kids around!

Nubby, my grandfather passed away last month so I am right there with you. Be mindful that everyone experiences grief completely differently, so feel comfortable with however you feel. I hope you find comfort in your warm memories of the time you shared. Much love, girl! I hope this week brings you some beauty.

Condolences on your grandmother. I’m glad you got to be around your family, hopefully that was helpful.

How fun it sounds to work with your brother! My sister went to film school, but can do a little of everything. I hope that someday I will somehow have the chance to work with her! What fun.
