POM Wonderful: Pure Genius Advertising

I’ve been a POM drinker for years, but I’ll admit that it was the logo emblazoned with a big, red heart and the mod packaging that originally drew me in!
POM Wonderful is a privately owned company and brand of pomegranate juice, advertised as one of the most powerful naturally-occurring antioxidants. It is sold in distinctive double bulb-shaped clear plastic bottles. Its taste has been described as similar to cranberry juice. POM Wonderful is made from the “Wonderful” variety of pomegranate, which is grown in the central and southern San Joaquin Valley of Central California. The variety has a particularly sweet flavor in comparison with other varieties.

As I was recently surfing the POM site, I discovered their advertising archives and thought they were too good to keep just to myself! Favoring a generous amount of white space and basic sans serif typefaces, the overall look is cool, modern and quite simple in that it always makes use of the product itself as the central prop.

POM also keeps a nice little blog.

Oh. I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooove POM. I just started buying the drink last year, I had always wanted to buy it because of it’s packaging, but always thought it was too expensive (as a youngster, anyways).
My mother instilled a love of pomegranates in me at a young age. Every November, when they came in season, she would buy me one. It took me about a week to eat because I didn’t know the “proper” way of eating them. I’ll have to say, the way I did it was quite fun, but took a lot of effort, although the correct way took me the better part of an hour, peeling three back in the fall at school.

But I’ve also got a terrible love of POM Tea. I bought two and put them in my mini fridge at school, which gets very cold. So when I went to drink them, they had icy chunks. SO GOOD! I recommend that you try it!

I really need to break down and buy a bottle of their juice.

Ooo, POM! I always want to get it but then I’m slightly put off by the price. I do agree that their overall aesthetic is great, though. I recycled one of their jar-like glasses (tall and rather thin) and made a cute little “Reasons I Love You” jar for my boyfriend

AmyTheFreak: It is way expensive! My mom used to work at a food company and got me samples when POM first hit the market and it was immediate love! That takes some serious dedication to eat an unjuiced pomegranate!
Jami: the straight pomegranate version can be a bit tart; the blueberry blended version goes down much smoother!
Sarah Frost: Yeah, it’s expensive but I do love the reusable iced tea containers, as you do.

I hate this advertising! What are you showing me an IV of blood for and hoping that that would i) be visually appealing, ii) make me want to drink it, and iii) make me thirsty?
I’m taking good enough care of myself without having to resort to that, thank you very much!

I am sure the product is good, but it certainly cannot cheat death. As parents of a child who fought cancer for 6 years and then passed away last year, the ads are nothing but a stark reminder of years of suffering, of taking pure poison by IV, and years of having tiny hopes squashed by horrible realities. some of the POM ads are highly offensive and insensitive to every human being suffering from cancer and to their families and support groups. there is nothing wonderful about them. I sincerely hope, that none of the brilliant people who dreamed up these ads will ever find out what life with cancer is really like.
