Hey Nubby! I actually have quite a few questions I have been meaning to ask you. No better time than the present!
I am an interviewer for the livejournal community: http://community.livejournal.com/addmyartjournal/
I was wondering if I could interview you for the community?
The whole basis of it is artists promoting other artists. Right now we just interview people and post different artists work with links to where you can find them on the web. I want to start incorporating tutorials on the business, branding, marketing, selling, merchandise aspects of the art business. I also want to touch on different techniques or tricks of the trade for different mediums. I hope to be able to do tutorials on graffiti, sculpture, silk screening, etc since there seems to be a lot of interest in learning these things in the art community.
So, I was wondering if we could have you as a guest poster (or even mirror some of your articles) in the community with some of your articles that are related to the business, branding and marketing sides of the art business. I don’t know anyone that writes about these things better than you.
I’m also hoping on taking the community and moving it to an actual domain in the next few months and expanding it into an online magazine, blog and general artist resource on the web. Any tips on transforming a site into something like this? The business side of it is the part that I am the most worried about, I don’t want to forget to do something and having it hurt me a few years down the line.
Sorry this is so long!

Yay!! :) I’m so excited you’ve decided to go ahead with this…

I have a question for you: I’m just starting to pick up odd design jobs here and there. I’m still in the midst of getting my degree, but I’m super excited to already be working in my field of choice! However, I feel ultra-lost a lot; especially when it comes to time management and pricing. :p Do you have any advice on this aspect of freelancing?

Also: what are your favorite sources for fonts? ;) I’m a total font junkie who’s always on the hunt for new ones to add to my collection. lol.

Hope this wasn’t too much, all at once! :)

Okay, this one is a bit of a lark, but could you give me any advice for an afternoon date in Portland with a graphic design major, no less? What would you wear on a (probably) rainy afternoon date and what are some of the best galleries, parks or restaurants to visit in PDX? Thanks. _Kate

P.S. Sorry if this one’s a bit too local; feel free to generalize.

I’m curious to know how, as someone with an interest in both business/marketing & graphic design/the arts, how you approach networking (both in real life & online). Networking can often be very shallow, where people use one another to advance & solely promote themselves; on the other hand, it can also be a means of building relationships with those you respect & supporting each others endeavors.

So how do *you* do it?

[Reply]

» Ashe Mischief said: { Apr 3, 2008 - 02:04:33 }

Gah! I just realized (so many hours later) I may have come across antagonistic; I didn’t mean to ask if you were the type to use & abuse, but rather, you DO seem to have a good sense of networking with people. So I was curious what tips, tools, and secrets of that trade you may have (esp. for someone like myself who is very bad at networking and feels guilty doing it!).

I’ve been wondering, with contract work – what is the best way to go about kind of legalising things so that one does not get screwed out of compensation for their work? :)

Ok here is one for you!

Im a photographer (who also like to dabble in other forms of fine art and fashion design). Im starting to consider how to market my work as a brand, and putting together a press pack (which your tutorial is very useful for!).
However I am trying to decide whether to use my real name to work under, or whether to work under a artistic/business alias. My birth name isnt that memorable or remarkable so Im not sure whether it would be a good move to work under a different name, and choose something more interesing and memorable. As my work continually changes and I branch out into new areas Im not sure whether to work under one name, or whether to work under various alias (depending on the field eg fashion, fine art). As someone who works in multiple fields I thought you would have some great opinions on this (sorry its long, hope it makes sense!)

this may be a strange question, but quite simply how do you go about making a website? once the domain name is bought, how do you go about adding content and hosting data? in your experience, how much has having a website cost and what are the returns (monetary and otherwise)? and what do you do about copy writing or protecting your work? have you ever had any experience with people taking credit for your work?

hope you can help :]

I’m going to be spending 4ish months in Oregon on student exchange from september till december and I’m wondering what the must see’s are. As a graphic designer what can’t I miss out on seeing in Portland? What are some awesome places to go and things to do? Keeping in mind I am a 20 year old aussie girl :)

I have a question! I’m a fellow graphic designer and artist, and like you, love to make collages using fashion magazines. I’ve never tried to sell any of it before because I’ve been warned that the images from the magazines are copyrighted and I could get in major trouble for selling art with them on it. Have you ever received any cease-and-desist letters about the images you use?

I know that you have a great interest in typography. As a designer who is relatively new to the industry, I find that typography is, although interesting, a great challenge to me. There are many sites out there with tips on how to pick a typeface or combination of typefaces that fit the feel of a project, but I was wondering if you could share with me some of your own favorite typefaces and what they mean to you.

I would like to start my own website that, like yours and so many other aspiring designers, will serve as my online portfolio and a blog. Although I had a personal website in the past, I’ve never had my own domain and I have no idea how to register a domain name, how much space or bandwidth I should buy, etc. Do you have any advice for me? What content is appropriate for such a site? What web hosting company has the best deal?

Hi Nubby,
In a couple of months I will be going for my interview at a Graphic Design school and was wondering what kind of things I should put in my portfolio. I have been out of school for a while and have just been working in a bookstore and doing my own art (collage and mixed media stuff mostly) and comic strips. Should I try and do some design type stuff or should I just provide examples of my art?

Thanks :)

Hey Nubby,
first of all i am SO very glad that I found your site and Galas, you two are HUGE inspirations to me, I was just looking at your “credentials” lol and notice that you too have an associates degree in Graphic Design, you seem so sucessful, how do you get past the “well you dont have a bachelors degree and didnt go to a houity toity art school” stigma? ( I DID go to art schooll just not he big one here in Cleveland) Because it keeps getting brought up in interviews, I have worked in design for 6 years now doing my own stuff, but never secured a job with a stable company. When employers try to downplay my education, how do I fight back on that? I mean I like to think I do great work, and have been told that by my clients, but why can’t larger companies see that? I just want to work permanatly in my field, and this Bachelors Snobbery is getting in my way. Any Advice??
Thanks for anything!

Hey Nubbs (feels like I know you so well I’ve actually given you a nickname!),

Let’s start with how thankful I am that I found you and Gala. I’ve always wanted to write, and having a website of my own where I can churn out content based on my passions; fashion, lifestyle, personal development, the works has ALWAYS been my dream. The thing is, I don’t know where to start. I failed my Web Graphics module while doing a diploma in Mass Communication and I’m really bad at HTML, much worse in design. I’d be grateful if you could help me out. Where do I start? I’ve been trying to learn the trade for years, but 2008 is coming to a close and I still haven’t gotten anywhere. I’ve published some stores for Seventeen magazine Singapore and marketed fashion and beauty magazines freelance but I know I’m capable of more. Please, I’d be so grateful. And would it be possible to commission you to do my website design or can you recommend someone to me? I know I live on the other side of the world but I’m willing to do all it takes to realise my dreams. Oh, and I’m only just beginning to familiarise myself with LJ can you beleve it? It’ll take awhile for my network to acknowledge my online presence but I raved about your Virgo extravaganza. Everyone’s loving you girls!

Hi Nubby,

I am on my second year studying graphic design and have been reading your blog for a while now, thank you for all your advise and sharing your life with us. You are such an inspiration.

I was hoping to get some advise from you for my college project.

This year I’m working with a mentor and my brief from him is to

-create a typeface using materials/combinations of materials to reflect the name ‘sharp’
-produce the word ‘sharp’ and photograph the outcome.
-then extend the ‘sharp’ typeface into a number of items for the poetry club that is called ‘sharp’.

I don’t have a clue how to create a typeface and would appreciate if you had some tips to share, or even to suggest where to start…

Thank you so much!

My question is; I already have a Bachelor’s degree in communications; do you think I should get another Bachelor’s in graphic design, or could I should just go through a certificate program. I don’t have much experience working in the field, so I know developing a portfolio will be critical. Thanks so much for your insight! I love your blog =)

Hi Nubby!

I have a question for you. I’m relocating to a new state and different job market. Sadly, my cover letter is a little out of date, considering it was written pre-graduation (ex: I’ll soon be achieving my Graphic Design degree…). Now, I’m looking for a new Graphic Design job, not only in a failing economy, but also approaching firms cold without job leads. I’m happy with my identity and resume, just a little stumped with writing a new cover letter.

So I guess to clarify:

Do you have any tips/ examples for a writing a cover letter that doesn’t seem too stuffy and can showcase myself as an experienced designer?

Also, do you have any tips for entering into a cold job market?

Thanks so much!

Hello! I love your blog.
I am trying to create a logo for my new editing business, but I have no idea about graphic design/printing etc. Is it not advisable to create a logo with many colours? If so, is it only because it is too expensive to print? Is it okay to have a logo that is colourful, but also looks okay in black and white?

now, on to my question. any portland or oregon hotspots that you think are worth checking out? any other artists or designers that people should know about?

thanks for any help and as always i’ll look forward to your future blogging.

Hey Nubby!

I will get straight to the point. Who are the best promotional goods company/website out there? I’m building my press kit for graduation this fall and I want to have a little goody to hand out. Unfortunately, a lot of the promo companies that I find do not take an order of less than $200. I’m a student, so money is tough when they tell me they can’t just make 50 or 100 of one item. I don’t need a 1000 pens! I really liked the erasers of your art work that you used in your press kit but I’m open to other ideas. Thanks Nubby!

I came across your site today and I fell in instant love. I’ve been browsing through pages like crazy so when you check your site stats that’s me blowing up every link. :) I love how you took the red, black and white theme to the max. I started to only do artwork in those colours and it’s been creeping into my everyday life too!

I have a question, a few actually, but I’m an artist and I have submitted to digital magazines but never anything in actual print. I’m most comfortable with digital work but now I want to get in magazines, etc. Is this when I would be sending out my press kit?

And I guess my other question is, I want to start doing art shows but since I’ve been Miss Digital I’m kinda new to it. Do you have any advice on being a part of an art show? I guess I’ll have to make prints of my work, have my card to hand out, get things framed…oh my… I’m also really nervous about what to look for when it comes to offering actual prints of my work. Ugh I’m a mess but I’m trying.

Any answers would be appreciated. :)

What do sole traders normally use as their job title?
I have started my own proofreading and editing business and am not sure about what I should refer to myself as. Technically, I will be the owner, principle proofreader and editor, CEO, manager, etc!
Perhaps it is better to use no job title on my publications so it doesn’t sound too wanky!
Thank you!
Chelsea

Greeting Nubby, So this is an odd question I’m trying to find out what font is used for the (P) in the Pittsburgh paint logo. Also if you knew of any info on where to find reference on 1979-1986 design work of the same nature as this font, looking for pic’s of any store fronts or record shops, grocery stores, malls with this type of design layout from that era.

Thanks!

Hi Nubby.
I’ve recently started offering my design services for profit, and I’ve reached a snag when it comes to how to charge people for my designs. I seem to get a lot of people asking for a business card design, and I don’t know if I’m really low in my asking price or not. I usually tend to stick around $250 or $300 for design and printing. Seeing as how I have a print shop at my disposal, those fees aren’t as large for me as they might be for other designers, so I pass the savings on to the customer. Yet… am I still lowballing? Should I try to raise my prices a bit?

Thanks.
Sebastian

Hi!
I’m just wondering if you know where I could find the value of a Fornasetti piece. I have a circa 1950’s(?) flour container about 9 in. tall with kitchen utensils (hand painted). I’ve been trying for years to find out any background on this piece, but can never find anyone that knows anything about it. Most people I have asked online have basically ignored me. Can you help?
(I can send pics of the piece if you need them)
Thanks! ~Jenn~

I’m really enjoying your portfolio series, it’s been so helpful to look at a real, working artist’s professional presentation. As someone transitioning to freelance illustrator and working on putting together their first portfolio, I have plenty of things to put in it but I’m struggling with the order. I honestly don’t know what clients will want to see in what order.
I understand that will sort of depend on the client, but for a standard cold presentation, what would you recommend?

Hi there Nubby,

I graduated with my design degree 4 years ago and was snapped up by a promotional marketing company. At the time I was just happy to have my first ‘real’ job with a regular paycheck and my foot in the door. Now I feel it is time to take all that I have learned and move on to a more creative/fulfilling/dream job. However I feel like a typecast actress somewhat and my portfolio is full of promotional work. How do I approach employers in the area I’d rather be working and convince them that I am capable of more?

Cheers,
Chantal

I already have a full time job (interior designer) and my own blog (catchtag.blogspot.com) which I am currently developing. My question for you is: Are unpaid internships for such a position worthwhile? Do you think they would have any weight on a resume or for future editor positions?

p.s I have only recently come across your blog and LOVE IT! I particularly enjoyed reading your article on the power of personal branding.

Nubby,
I have recently gone through a LOT of changes in my life – and am finally at a place where I am figuring out who I am, what I like and how I want to present myself. I am trying to revamp my entire wardrobe and replace it with quality pieces that reflect the way I feel right now and that create a coherent style for me.

I’m wondering, how do you decide when an item is “worth it”? It’s easy enough to find basic items at a decent price but when you see a really special pair of shoes or a luxury bag that is going to be a splurge item, how do you decide whether or not to buy it?

I am living cash-only right now, so I have to be very choosy.

Thanks for all the inspiration!

Hello, Nubby!

I have been closely following your advice on personal branding…it’s all wonderful stuff, and it’s really been pointing me in the right direction! Here’s my question: I began a blog about six months ago, and have garnered a few views and a few links, but I’m a very different person now than I was then. Basically, I want to change the name, but I am concerned that this will affect the work I’ve done so far to publicize it.

One of my questions I can see has already been asked more than once (but I’ll ask it again): I love the Ask Nubby font! What is it?

My second question is this: Would you ever team up with other designers to create a studio or design team of your own? Or do you find freelance to be more liberating in terms of making final decisions?

Hi Nubby. You seemed like the best person to ask for an opinion on this: I just got hold of a very special pair of shoes. Specifically, Limited Edition 70th Anniversary Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers from Harrod’s department store in London (http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/jo_morgan/Picture10.png)

They weren’t expensive but they are very limited and beautiful. And now I’m wondering if I should even wear them when they arrive? I know you have a fantastic shoe collection that you get a lot of wear out of, but is there ever a case to be made for not wearing a special pair of shoes? And how do you take care of a very precious pair whilst still getting a good amount of wear out of them?

Thanks!

Hi!
I’m a graphic design student at the Hartford Art School. I keep wanting to drop out because I haven’t been getting the best feedback. How do you know if you’re capable of being a designer? Also, I really want to work in the music business because they encourage creativity. We’ve been doing a lot of business logos and such and I just feel I’m stuck in this uncreative bubble. Lastly, how much should I listen to my teachers? Design is so subjective. I show some people my work and they love it, while my teachers were overly critical about it. I could use a lot of advice so I can feel motivated again… Thanks!

also, my REAL question is this: i have a blog (see my link) that is so not as impressive as yours, but i eventually want to revamp it with my own .com and tie it in more “professionally” with myself as a freelancer. kind of like you’ve done with your site! or exilelifestyle.com etc. my “problem” is i currently blog under a pseudonym “Floreta” and am having a big of an identity crisis as to whether i should start using my real name. now, not to sound presumptuous, but i’m guessing that “nubby twiglet” is not your real name? so my question is how to go about doing business under a pseudonym. is it hard? is it doable? is it possible? is taxes a bitch??

signed,
identity crisis

Hi Nubby,

I’ve always been into collage the way you seem to be, but have never collaged on anything besides paper. Now I would like to take it up a notch, and begin collaging on various materials.

I was wondering what materials you use when collaging on wood, and if you had any tips/tricks so that things don’t fall apart and remain in place?

Thanks!

Hey Nubby!

I’m opening a small (for now!) artisan bakery in Pittsburgh taking my old world recipes, that are naturally organic and vegan, and give them that mod polish that I think you personify.

What tips do you have for someone when they’re working with a designer? What kinds of things should I bring for inspiration? What should be the focus of creating a corporate identity?

Advice, please: I received a bachelors in graphic design a few years back, but have done hardly anything with it and have been working in an only marginally related job since graduation. My design software isn’t even up to date. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting back into design lately, but don’t know where to start. What would you suggest I do?

hi ya Nubby,
As a long time fan :) I came to your show the first week we moved to Portland!! Back in California….but I have my LE print by you, hangn in my craft/art studio. Ok question…..I am working on creating my branding name…and its really kinda hard, harder than I thought it would be. How long did you work on creating Nubby Twiglet? I realize its an ongoing process, but how did you create the name and how long should I give myself to create my own name? I am a makeup artist and creating my name brand around that. Also do your friends call you Nubby? When you meet new people do you call yourself Nubby? and do they ask for your “real” name instead?

Thanks for the advice :)

Kisses Tanya

I have been thinking of starting a blog for sometime now and I would really like to get that going… my biggest road block- how do you set up a page?!?! I love your setup style and thats roughly what I would be going for.. the middle column for my post and the left and right sides for links and whatnot. but where do I go to start up a page? please help!

Your advice on portfolio’s has been so helpful!
After having my portfolio ripped to shreds by an old employer i totally lost my confidence in my work and especially the way i put together a folio, But slowly am getting back into it. Thanks to your page. My area of graphics is Packaging and branding, i have 2 wine label jobs under my belt now, but need to get employed by a studio, do you have any advice on how to layout a packaging portfolio?

Also what do you think …serif or san serif for project descriptions.???

I was wondering, how do you introduce yourself to your clients? Nubby? or your given name? When applying for a job, which one do you use, since it’s what would appear on your paycheck, no?

Also I’m currently working on a PDF CV/portfolio but I find it hard to give myself an “image”. Always end up changing it because I do not feel it represents me well, I’m too picky. I also find my work is not strong enough and I’d like to give myself some projects to expand good work. Do you have any motivation tips?

Thank you!

I love wearing dresses and being girly, but I find that I own more evening and cocktail dresses than everyday ones. I have a question – is there a “correct” way to approach a small business, and offer to design a new corporate identity for them? Is there a polite way to tell them that, from a designers point of view, their image could be improved – and that I’m the best person for the job?

Hello Nubby,

I found your website while browsing through search results for “I want to be a graphic designer.”… and I do. I must say I was so pleased that your blog is one of the first results I selected as it was by FAR the most informative. I have always loved graphic design… I am self taught and specialize into retouch and random design here and there for websites or business cards/pamphlets and was thinking about school to further my chances of success in this field. I was thinking about going to Community College first so that I can be sure that this is EXACTLY what I want to do and was wondering whether or not there’s any classes a CC would offer that might pertain to this field or if I should just go straight for a graphic design school… Also is retouch working taken as seriously as general design for advertising or is it just a part of one big job… Thanks in advance!

Hi Nubby,

I’m currently studying to be a graphic designer and am very close to finishing these studies. I wanted your opinion on one thing: grade of degree vs content of portfolio.

We all know that your portfolio really matters, but do you think it is necessary to get a high finishing grade to have any hope as a graphic designer?

End of year jitters are really to blame for this but with certain circumstances this year I feel that I havent done my absolute best and this is really worrying me.

What do you think?

Hi Nubby,

I am about to make a major change in my career and would really appreciate some advice from you.

I have been a student in the sciences for a long time and am now considering switching to the “creative side” seriously. As I am about to move out of the familiar comfort zone, I am having a lot of doubts. Have you ever had doubts when making major career changes? How do you reason and decide what to do? I am torn between playing it safe and taking that leap of faith that might change your life for the better (or not…).

Thank you so much.

Hi Nubby, I just have a personal branding question.

I have plans to change my given name, but I don’t know what to yet. But I don’t want to wait until I’ve figured it out before I start promoting myself.
Would it be a huge mistake to start out working and promoting myself under one name and then later change to another?

Thanks in advance!

I love your page and found your press kit guidelines were very helpful, except I’m confused on how I should put the actual packet together. I want it to look like a magazine or a look book so when the buyers pull it out of the folder they would have a packet or a book in their hand. would it be unprofessional to have it in a small binder? or clipped folder? what do you think?

Hey Nub!
I’m a final year design student, and I’m about to go on the hunt for my internship. This may sound silly, but i don’t know what is appropriate job interview attire for a graphic designer! i’ve been told to dress “professional but not corporate.” So perhaps you could give some realistic advice on what to wear, without looking overly corporate, but definitely professional – everything from appropriate heel height to accessories if any at all! (perhaps even give a few examples that you’ve come across to be unsuccessful/successful and why)

Dear Nubby,

being a graphic design student still working on fictional projects, I have the need to create on my own as well. I do this all the time, and I especially work a lot with typography. I often find these personal projects more giving to my portfolio, however, the content is mostly nonsense. I therefore wonder if you have any advice on creating/finding content, mosly text. As a student, did you always create your own text for your artwork or did you use quotes or perhaps remade posters (just keeping the content)? Are there any rules for this?

Thank you!

Dear Nubby,

Since I was a young girl I have always been categorized as the “artsy” type. I was drafted to go to a special arts HS (ie- the movie Fame) and always get offered menial jobs from people close to me. Such offers include making flyers for events, small websites, ghost writing and designing. I often take the work since I am a student and strapped for cash.

Since my talents are so scattered it’s hard to market them as related. I am a copy writer and editor, but I’m also equally talented as a photographer and illustrator.

How can I streamline my talents to create more serious opportunities ?

As a veteran designer, art director, (20 years this month) and former professor of typography, I’ve been witnessing a disturbing industry wide trend over the last few years. The near extinction of the creative brief. The creative brief is VITAL on so many levels to the design process from both creative and client perspectives. It would be wonderful if you would spread the word to your audience about the value of a good creative brief.

Hello Nubby! I am sixteen years old, an aspiring graphic/web designer and professional blogger and I am avid reader of your blog. I am interested in creating a website showcasing my personal style, graphic design, and my photography. I have grown up around technology and design and started tampering in web design and graphic design when I was fourteen (at which age I created a website that has since been deleted.) My mother is a small-scale web designer and my father deals with marketing and advertisement. I would very much like to become a successful designer and blogger and I possess time to devote to my aspirations. But I’m not exactly sure where to start. I want to distinguish myself and I believe by starting young I am able to do so more easily. What would your advice be to someone my age who is still in high school and aspires to become a household name in terms of blogging and design? And do you use a CMS such as WordPress, Joomla or Drupal?
Thank you!

Is there is a standard way to do this, working in CS4? layout in InDesign then somehow export to PS – the goal being layered files? hmmmm?

I’m unfortunately one of the many MANY young individuals who has just graduated from a 4-year college with an art degree. I’ve worked with traditional studio arts, screenprinting, graphic design, and webdesign — I have been freelancing ever since I graduated BUT I need a steady-time job. Freelancing is great, but right now it’s just not for me — at least until I get my life in order and I move out of my parent’s home!

I have been looking for work every week- sometimes every day- and I’ve had no luck. I live in a very rural area and have to travel at least 25 miles to get to any kind of civilization so it’s even more difficult than I imagined..
Any favorite websites I can go to to get my name out there? AIGA? I feel like I’ve hit a road block. BLAH!!!!

Dear Nubby,
last night I had a dream, where you and Gala came to my house (it wasn’t actually my house, but more of a conference room… but it felt like my house during the dream).
You came to announce that you were both going to shut down your blogs, and we (me + many many random people who were there) could ask you any questions we wanted. (I remember Gala had a child, and that she wouldn’t answer questions regarding her age. She looked about 50 years old, and you looked about 20.)
The thing is, you were saying ‘goodbye’ as if you were leaving this world, not just the blogosphere.
My question is:
If you could write one more article before leaving this world (blogosphere or planet earth), what would you say?
I’m so curious.. (I’ts actually 6 am here and I’m writing this instead of sleeping)

Thanks!

Hey, Nubby.
To give you a little background on my question, I’m a graphic design student, and this semester I decided to take a workshop class on fashion design. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that any of my ideas or designs resonate with my professor and the class in general. Yet, when I share them with my graphic design friends and teachers, they seem to like it. Going back to the question itself, and seeing as you’re versed in both graphic design and style, what do you think are the main differences when working with fashion as opposed to graphic design?

I have been meaning to ask you this question for some time. It’s clear that you have a pretty great collection of different typefaces to use in your design. I’d like to know how you go about finding a great font for a project – do you search online and then buy the font, or do you just use your own font library and choose from there.

Also, how did you acquire all of your fonts? Did you purchase them while in school? Did clients pay for the licensing of these fonts because they were required for their projects?

It is a really frustrating thing for me and my business because the cost of licensing fonts is very high (and rightly so) and I am struggling with whether I should buy a few large packages that have versatile typefaces that still speak to my style or browse online and purchase when I think I found the proper one.

The issue is, as I’m sure you know, that I go through multiple font choices before landing on one.

Hello! long time reader, first time commenter, (love your website and your shoes!)

I’m a graphic design student right now and i’m taking about the same route you did (business, marketing, and graphic design) although i’ve only taken one business class so far.

I’m having trouble designing and branding myself for my website-how did you go about branding yourself? How did you decide on the type faces, the flow of your site, the color scheme, all that jazz? What questions did you ask yourself that kind of helped shape those choices?

p.s.
the name of my website (my foot print) is a combination of my addiction to shoes, how i like painting on them, my love of printmaking and design, and hopefully leaving an impression of my style on people.
I want the site to be like a portfolio of my work and hopefully get job offers from it for painting shoes, doing graphic design work, and printed materials.
For the website i’m still putting up pictures of all my art and stuff.

Dear Nubby:

You seem so happy with Joey. It is beautiful & inspiring. It seems like ~last year you went through a break up. If so, you handled it with such grace.

Would you consider writing about ending a relationship & finding love again?

You inspire me in so many ways — I would so appreciate your thoughts on this topic.

Hi Nubby,

I have been going to school for business for the past four years and just now realized that I want something more for myself than just the business world. When I started to think about what it was that I love to do I realized that I love to take pictures, I have a Nikon Coolpix 100, but most of all that I love to do things with the photos after I’ve taken them. I have been looking into going to school for graphic design but fear that my lack of drawing abilities and knowledge in general may be a problem. Thoughts?

Hi Nubby, I was wondering if it matters whether you pursue a Graphic Design Certificate vs. A two year associates in Graphic Design, both at a community college. Will having the certificate instead of an associate’s in graphic design look worse to employers?

Hi Nubby!
I love your blog, it’s one of my favorites! You have such good taste in design and fashion, I love it!
So my question…I’m a graphic design student going to Mt. Hood Community College (where you went I believe?) I have a lot of little design jobs and I have no clue how to set pricing! I tend to charge people less than I probably should. How did you decide on your pricing and stick to it?
Thanks!

hey nubby! i don’t quite remember how i discovered your website but it has become a staple in the few sites i drool over. question for you – i have searched the internet far and wide in hopes to find designer quote examples. what i want to know is, what is your process in quoting a job, and what do you use/include in a formal quote? i used to just quote through email, but i’m looking for something a bit more professional – also i have read up on freelance contracts as well – should that be something separate from a quote, or should it all be included in one?

if you could let me know your thoughts that would be wicked awesome.

great wedding pics btw.

Hi Nubby,
I was just wondering if you’d ever share some of your organization secrets when it comes to managing client projects, etc. You have shared your extraordinary organization of clothes, shoes, etc., and I was wondering how you manage client materials, finished products, paperwork, etc. It seems like a silly question, but I am always looking for ideas on how to better streamline my organization system (or lack thereof!), and figure you’d have some great insights. Thanks!

Hi Nubby,
I very recently discovered your website and I’ve been trying to devour every article since. I would really appreciate your advice on an issue I’ve had to deal with for most of my life. Now that I’m trying to make a go of my web design business, it’s a constant self esteem wrecker.

The problem I have is that I am constantly under-valued by others and this is AWFUL when it comes to one’s career or business. Most recently, I was able to impress someone by my resume and website. However, once we met – things changed. The amount offered to me quickly changed from the market related amount to a sweat shop rate! This is not new, it’s a general theme in my life and I’m not sure why.

I have the qualifications, skills, experience and portfolio amongst being able to manage clients etc. I’m almost 30 and I do know that I look young for my age, but I do not look ridiculously childlike. I’ve been told that I sound like a school kid over the phone, which is really annoying. Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t giggle and erm and er a lot, it is the tone of my voice. I suppose that somehow my demeanour also doesn’t help me very much, although I do not know why. My English is first class, I speak better English than the British do. I honestly spend large amounts of time wondering what I am doing wrong.

I think that people buy into that loud, extremely extroverted, flirty, bubbly, hearty laughing, blabber-mouth type of personality. I think that people equate talking the talk with walking the walk. I am a generally serious person. I do not laugh after every sentence I utter and I don’t do cutesy. I believe in having substance and talking with conviction than talking for the sake of talking. Unfortunately, I think that this attitude is not doing me any favours. It seems like flighty and frivolous pays these days. I hate bargaining over web design fees and I’m honestly so tired of having to settle for less than my worth.

I would really appreciate your advice/help or maybe you can point me in the right direction. I’m trying EFT, I burn candles for relevant mystical uses – I’ll try anything at this stage but I really would value your opinion. Thank you very very very much.

Hi Nubby,

I am 18 and I am half way through a technical collage specializing in graphic design. I have wanted to be a designer since I was 11 or 12 and I am very passionate about every aspect of the design process the planning, researching, the creation, preparation, everything. I was wondering if transferring to a four year and taking marketing classes would be helpful? Also, I live in Arkansas. I am open to moving, but would like to stay in-state if possible. The thing is I aspire to become a well known, strong, well rounded designer, much like yourself. Would living in Arkansas hinder my opportunities even if my personality was online? I don’t know of any designers in my state that have even half the impact and boldness as you. I have a long way to go, but do you think I would be able to change that? (I know you don’t know me personally, but think of me as the person I have described myself as being if that helps.)

From a budding creative mind,
Jessica.

Hi Nubby,

I’m a senior majoring in Graphic Design and Media Production about to graduate next month. I am in the process of applying to full-time positions. My ideal job would be to work in an ad agency, design firm, television or film studio in New York.

I was just wondering what advice you have for me. Where should I look? Should I contact human resources or the design directors directly? I’ve applied to about 25 different places so far, and have only heard back from 1 place, only to tell me that they weren’t hiring. So, as you can see… I’m both frustrated and worried that I will graduate without a direction to go.

Any advice you can give would be great.

Hey Nubby! :) I look up to you so much, you just seem to have everything figured out, you know?

I’m about to graduate high school next month, and I’ve applied to a college for a 2-year diploma in graphic design. (I know it’s still too soon to tell, maybe, but) Considering that I’m done the 2-year diploma, I can upgrade for another year, it’s advanced graphic design, so I basically get 2 diplomas, I think. After those 3 years of studying, I get a one-year transfer credit to a university here where I live, towards a BFA degree. I’m not really sure how it works, yet. But I could’ve applied for a BFA degree at the university now, but I didn’t, because their GD program is more studio art and art history, if you know what I mean. In the college, they do more…..modern? art. What would you say are the ups and downs of the choices I made?

Thank you so much!

Hi Nubby!
I just read your post about taking the leap into doing what you love. It’s ironic that you should bring this up at this time because I have been thinking about this exact thing more and more lately. I am currently a graphic design student with one more semester and no solid plan for after college. I have been thinking about starting a freelance business and creating a blog to showcase my portfolio for quite a while. These plans have been put on the backburner due to time constraints and other excuses, but mostly because I have no knowledge of business, marketing, or how to start a well-designed blog that showcases my portfolio. I have been attempting to study up by reading blogs (thank you for your amazing and consistent advice and inspiration, btw), but the thought of starting up a blog, creating an identity for a freelance company, going through the steps of starting a small business, and reaching out to potential clients is still overwhelming! Do you have any advice that might make these tasks seem less daunting? Also, for when I do get around to starting my blog, do you know of a good way to protect portfolio images…or do you think I should I even worry about this?
Thanks for your time!

I have been forced into a life of freelancing to make money and sometimes I just don’t know what the heck I am doing. Specifically when it comes to creating logos and brand identities for clients- how do you create something they will love? ESPECIALLY when they don’t know what they want at all? Hi Nubby!
I’m a young graphic designer and though I like to think that I know it all, every once in awhile i come accross something that really throws me for a loop. Most of my work has been digital or web based, so I don’t have too much experience with print. I knew the difference between RGB and CYMK colors, but it wasn’t until I was trying to design business cards for myself that I realized how great a gap it was!! My branding is primarily black and white, but with pops of bright red, blue, and yellow thrown in– what’s driving me crazy is that from what I understand, bright red and blue simply cannot be reproduced in CYMK. For some reason I’m having a difficult time wrapping my head around this. Obviously people DO print bright red, since I see it all the time! How do you go about this? It’s tremendously frustrating and I really would hate to have to drop the bright colors from any printed material I make. I know you’ve printed bright red for materials like your pill stickers, so I was wondering if you had any advice on the matter?

Thanks!!

Hi Nubby,

I’ve been recently laid off from teaching, and I’ve been debating of going back to school for a Graphic Designing Degree. I know you’ve said that you took a 2 year degree to get where you are and such, but what should I look for in a coursework. At the school I’m subbing at, I was talking to a recruiter for Art Institute Houston, but I have had friends who had bad experiences there. What did you reccomend looking for in a Graphic Desiging Course, should I go the whole 9 yards and get the multimedia degree designing web based sites and mobile based sites?

I based this decision on the fact I love doing artwork on photoshop, and many of your designing tips benefitted me greatly on my art, I figured that Graphic Design would be the best way for me to go.

Any tips would be greatly beneficial, I figured I needed a change in my life, and you have been a great inspiration.

Ever since I’ve stumbled upon your blog I’ve felt a surge of creativity that I lost for a few years due to crippling depression. Right now I’m in my first semester of an undecided/liberal arts degree at community college here in NY. I know I want to do something arts related. From reading your blog I’ve realized that all the things I’m interested in correlate to a graphic design career, something I’ve never even considered before!
The only thing preventing me from making graphic design my major is my confidence. I mean, I’m not particularly good at drawing/illustrating and also I don’t feel I’m particularly creative enough or equipped with the right amount of “natural talent” to succeed at this degree.
Any advice or words of encouragement on getting started? Do you think this is a good path for me to take, and how did you know that this was the right path for you?

Thank you, and wish you the very best!

Nubby your the best! Many of your posts has guided me to become a better designer! So i write to you today as i am stuck on a new project, hope you can help. =) my uncle opened up a store and would like me to design the window decals, a doubled sided panel (about 6 ft. high) that will hang by the window, plus design the store logo that will go on a canopy above the store. Problem is I’m used to designing graphics for websites and smaller print projects, i don’t even know where to start with this one, and the timeline he’s giving me seems short, plus im doing this for free =/ (ya i know) . After i design the logo, should i search for print shops (his store is in a different city than where i live), and would i have to measure out exact dimensions of the canopy and panel?

sorry for the massive dilemma, just extremely lost of where to begin =)

Happy days to you!

Hi nubby,

I’m helping design my sister’s wedding program, and I have complete creativity when it comes to the design. It’s a Disney Princess Wedding, Mexican Wedding and a Catholic Wedding where I’ll have to write the program with instructions for those who do not follow the Catholic faith how to follow along with the ceremony, and explanations as to the different traditions in a Catholic Mexican Wedding. Its alot to over come, and I was wondering how would you approach this monstrosity of a task.

Thank you,

Melinda

Hi Nubby.

I just recently stumbled upon your beautiful website.

You seem very motivated!
But, how do you keep that motivation? Do you ever get hung up on a piece/project? If so, what do you do to get out of that funk?

Hey Nubby,
Woops I guess I should have asked my question on this page…sorry.

I have a senior Graphic Design show coming up and I designed a six page magazine spread and cover. How, as a professional, do you think I should display it in a gallery? Do you think it would be wise to frame them, put them on foam board or something else?

Hey Nubby, I’d be surprised if this wasn’t asked before but I was wondering what your process is for taking the photographs you post as well as what camera/equipment you use?

Thanks!

hey nubby. in my final year of highschool next year, i have to write myself a brief and work on it over the course of a semester. it requires tech drawing so we have to design a 3D object but that can be just one component amongst other things, take for example a light that you will later design a poster for. i really want to design an object that is innovative/interesting and challenging when it comes to tech drawing but also want to incorporate graphic design in my brief. if that makes anysense would you have any ideas or suggestions. thanks in advance!
PS i really enjoy your blog :)

Hi!!,
I have a many questions and would love to pick your brain but I’ll go with this one for now: Been super inspired by the My Cross To Bear series and your journey through the making of them. My question is, what’s your making art/collage process??

Gratzi!! :0)

Hi there! I’ve always wondered if you wear high heels (almost) everyday. Do you? Have you experienced any kind of problem regarding your tendons, for example? I know it’s a weird question, but I’ve been dying to ask for about 2 years now, haha.

Hi Nubby,

I’m looking into graphic design school but some take 2+more years while others take 1. For obvious reasons I’d rather do for the 1 year because I am graduating with a BA soon. Any advice? Thanks!

Hi Nubby!

I was wondering if you could explain why you are so drawn to the red cross symbol. What’s the significance?

What are your favorite fonts / typefaces? I notice you use pretty unique type, do you create your own custom fonts for your designs?

Quick questions… I just created my new blog and I’m currently thinking about ways to make money off of it through AdSense ads and other programs. That got me to thinking, “Hm, I wonder if Nubby has ads?” and what do you know, you have only 1 single ad! So, how come you don’t throw a google ad up to make a bit more money? Or, are you too much of a Virgo for all that clutter on the page? Do you feel as though it would lower you credibility as a graphic designer? What are your thoughts on using ads for personal blogs (like mine)? Thanks!!! I look forward to your answer!

Hello Nubby! I’m a High School Senior with a huge interest in pursuing Graphic Design when I go to college (Hopefully SCAD) I hope this question is not redundant but I was hoping you could tell me why you chose to delve into web communications (I’m only using terminology that I know, sorry if it’s inaccurate) as opposed to other fields that fall under graphic design; like animation for example. On a random note, your blog is divine!

This isn’t a question, bt moreso a book reccomendation.

have you seen Simon Garfield’s book, “Just My Type” about fonts? Its incredible, and I think you’d appreciate it.
