Nubby, I agree 100% that graphic design is not an easy field and can sometimes be frustrating. However, for a creative person like yourself, being able to express yourself artistically outweighs the negatives that come with the job.

Thank you so much for writing this! I just recently left grad school in psychology because I wasn’t happy there. I decided to go back and take the few classes I needed to get my degree in design, but having been away for a few years I’ve been feeling like I can’t hack it. Your blog really helped to calm me down and to strengthen my resolve to become a designer. I’m very fortunate in that I recently made some connections in my area with people who really want to help me make it as a designer and I also consider myself fortunate that I found your thoughts on the matter. Thanks a gazillion!

so i went to graphic design school and now i got a real job as an inhouse/freelance/ at
a firm. And lets be honest. the amount of work I have to put in to a various things makes me seriously reconsider this is a career. I mean in school it was easypeasy but in real life its ALOT of work. Last night i had to stay away for 30something hours just to get an Add done before the deadline. If you are considering this as aproffesion you have the prepared for this stuff and the schools are not gonna tell you about it!

Hi,

I am working as an editorial assistant in a publishing house. I have always been artistic and interested in crafts and in working with software and paints. I used to create my own gretings cards and gift wrapping paper in school. In the publishing house i have worked on developing covers, designing layouts for books, etc and i want to specialise in editorial design. i have an undergrad degree in english and no design training or experience. Does applying to a design grad school make sense? I do want to become a grahic designer but the undergraduate programms seem too diffused - i was advised that for people swtiching careers a graduate school is best.
please help. I would love to hear what advice and suggestions people have.

This is very useful. I need to train/nurture some colleagues who aspire to be graphic designers. I went through learning the rule period. Even I work for the most boring industry, applying the basic esthetics are important. Since I do effortlessly...so many of onlookers want to change their career path. But you really nailed the one fact. [...] you want to do anything badly enough, you’ll find the time. [...] Link to your post will be sent out to whoever knocks on my door to be a graphic designer, it is a "perfect" required reading. You are lucky to work with two wonderful graphic designers by your side.
